I’m Sasha, a self-taught, elopement and wedding photographer in Ouray, CO with a love for dirt roads and mountain air and a flair for style. With my specialties lying in weddings and elopements, I work with my clients to adapt my aesthetic to their unique personalities and situations and capture moments that they feel seen in.
Somewhere along the way, mountain elopements got a reputation for needing to be a full-on hiking moment. Like if you’re not waking up before sunrise, hiking several miles in wedding clothes, and exchanging vows while your calves are actively questioning your life choices, did you even elope?
And listen, I loooove a good hike. I LOVE the San Juans. I love when couples want to get a little windblown, a little muddy, and a lot wrapped up in the moment.
But your Ouray elopement day does not have to be one giant hike to be meaningful, cinematic, or wildly beautiful.
Check out my Ouray Elopement Guide here.

Ouray is one of those places where the good stuff is everywhere (literally!). Waterfalls are tucked into town. Jeep roads climb into the mountains. Hot springs are waiting when your feet are tired. The views show off without you having to hike miles upon miles for it.
As an Ouray elopement photographer, this is one of my favorite parts of helping couples plan here. You don’t have to choose between “adventurous” and “actually enjoyable.” You can build a day that feels like you. Whether that means a slow morning at your Airbnb, a Jeep ride into the mountains, vows with ridiculous views, a waterfall stop, and ending the night soaking in the hot springs like the main characters you are.
I will never be the person who tells you not to hike if hiking is your thing. But I will absolutely be the person who reminds you that your elopement day is not an outdoor contest to prove how adventurous you are.
Especially in Ouray, where you can get mountain views, waterfall moments, cozy downtown energy, and full cinematic main-character feelings without needing to plan your entire day around how many miles you hike during the day.
Some couples want to hike, go off-road. While others want to soak in hot springs, eat good food, and take portraits somewhere that makes them feel like they accidentally walked into a movie.
All of that counts.

Box Cañon Falls is one of those Ouray spots that gives you a lot of beauty without asking for a full hiking commitment.
It’s great if you want to add something moody, textured, and different to your elopement gallery. The canyon walls, the sound of the water, the little bit of chaos from the falls. Plus, it all photographs so differently from the open mountain views Ouray is known for.
This is also why I love helping couples mix locations instead of staying in one spot all day. Ouray gives you so many different backdrops close together, which means your gallery can feel like a full story instead of 300 photos in the exact same patch of pretty.

Ending the day at the hot springs is such an underrated move. You get the emotional high of the ceremony, the mountain portraits, the just-married chaos, and then you actually get to come down from it all in a hot spring surrounded by mountains.
This can be especially perfect if you’re eloping in a cooler month or planning a day with a lot of movement. It gives you something to look forward to after portraits and makes the whole day feel more grounded.

If you want the big San Juan Mountain views without turning your elopement into a FULL hiking day, Jeep roads are your best friend.
Ouray is surrounded by some of the most unreal mountain passes, alpine views, wildflower pockets, old mining roads, and the classic “are you kidding me?” pull-offs. A Jeep tour can help you get into the scenery that makes this area feel so cinematic without needing to hike miles in wedding clothes.
This is one of the BIGGEST reasons I love photographing elopements here. You can have an adventurous day that still feels relaxed. You can say your vows somewhere wild, hop back in the Jeep, and laugh about your hair being destroyed by mountain wind.

The Ouray Via Ferrata is not the “let’s casually wander over after vows” kind of activity. It’s more of a “we want our elopement trip to include something adventurous and slightly unhinged in the best way” option.
If you’re into climbing, heights, and adrenaline, this could be such a cool way to make your Ouray elopement experience feel even more like you. But this is also where planning matters. You’ll want the right gear, the right timing, and probably not a fitted dress with zero mobility unless you enjoy suffering for the plot.
Personally, I’d usually recommend treating this as part of your elopement trip, or planning it very intentionally into the day if it truly fits your vision.

Before you run straight into the mountains, give the day a second to breathe. Some of my favorite elopement photos happen before anything “big” has technically happened. Coffee on the porch. Vows being folded into a jacket pocket. Hair is half-done and boots are by the door.
Ouray has so many cozy stays and mountain-town hotels that make the getting-ready part of the day feel like its own little scene. And selfishly, I love when couples build in time for this because it gives your gallery texture. Not just epic views, but the in-between moments too.
Psst. I have a blog all about the best hotels to crash at after your elopement in Ouray!

Do not sleep on downtown Ouray.
I know the mountains are the obvious main character here, but the town itself has SO much charm. There’s colorful storefronts, old buildings, mountain views at the end of the street, little places to grab food or drinks and it gives your gallery a completely different feeling.
I love when couples include a little downtown time because it makes the day feel less like “we went to a pretty overlook” and more like “we spent the day in this tiny mountain town getting married and being ridiculously happy about it.”

The Million Dollar Highway is one of those drives where you keep saying, “Okay wait, pull over,” approximately every four seconds.
It’s a great option if you want a flexible elopement day with multiple scenic stops between Ouray, Silverton, and the surrounding San Juans. This can work especially well for couples who want variety without committing to one big hike.
That said, this is where having a photographer who knows the area matters. Not every pull-off is safe, realistic, or worth building your timeline around. Some spots are better for quick portraits, some are better at certain times of day, and some are simply not worth risking your nervous system over because Colorado mountain roads love to keep everyone humble.
I share more about one of my favorite sessions on the Million Dollar Highway, here.

My job is not just to show up with a camera and say, “Cute, now kiss.” I mean, yes, that will probably happen at some point.
But before your elopement day, I help you think through what kind of experience you actually want. Not just what looks good on Pinterest, what another couple did, or what sounds impressive when you tell people about it later.
I want to know what feels like you.
Do you want:
Because Ouray is basically my second home, I love to help you choose locations and activities that make sense for the season, the light, your comfort level, your outfits, your guests (if you’re bringing any), and the kind of gallery you want to look back on years from now.

Morning
Slow coffee, getting ready, detail photos, vow writing, music playing in the background, maybe a little nervous pacing because it’s your wedding day and being chill is fake sometimes.
Late Morning
First look at your lodging, downtown Ouray, or a quiet nearby spot with mountain views.
Midday
Private vows or ceremony, depending on the light, location, and season.
Afternoon
Box Cañon Falls or a downtown stop for food/drinks.
Golden Hour
Jeep tour or scenic mountain portraits in the San Juans.
Evening
Hot springs, private dinner, drinks, or heading back to your Airbnb to be cozy and married.
Your Ouray elopement can be adventurous without being exhausting, cinematic without feeling staged, and intentional without turning into a minute-by-minute production.
Whether you want Jeep roads, waterfalls, hot springs, slow Airbnb moments, downtown wandering, or mountain views that make you forget how to act normal, I’d love to help you build a day you can’t want to experience!
