For elopements, the summer months (June to September) are ideal. Trails are open, the weather is milder, and the greenery is in full bloom, offering a breathtaking backdrop for your photos!
Most of the best elopement spots require a 4X4 vehicle due to the rugged terrain. If you’re not comfortable with off-roading, consider hiring a guide or driver to get you safely to these remote locations.
My Go-To Recommendations for OHV (Off-Highway Vehicle Rentals)
Always check if your elopement location requires a permit. This is especially important in protected areas to ensure you can enjoy your day without any interruptions. However, most areas in the San Juans do not require a permit – another perk of eloping here!

For couples dreaming of a remote, adventurous elopement with breathtaking mountain views, where the destination and the experience are equally significant, creating an unforgettable and truly one-of-a-kind celebration.
Imogene Pass is the ultimate spot for couples seeking an adventurous elopement with jaw-dropping views. This high-altitude pass, accessible from either Telluride or Camp Bird Road in Ouray, takes you up to a summit of just over 13,000 feet. From here, you’ll have panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, making it the perfect backdrop for exchanging vows. Along the way, you’ll pass by Lake Como, a stunning alpine lake with crystal-clear blue waters, offering another gorgeous spot for photos.
Consider timing your elopement for early morning or late afternoon to avoid crowds and capture that soft, golden light that makes the mountains look even more magical.
For couples seeking a blend of adventure and seclusion for their destination wedding or elopement, the San Juans provide the perfect bold, natural backdrop, offering expansive spaces for private, intimate moments amidst breathtaking scenery.
For a more secluded, intimate setting, Governor Basin is one of the most beautiful, lesser-known spots in the San Juans. Accessible via Camp Bird Road, this trail is a bit more challenging but offers unbeatable views of the surrounding basin. Wildflowers blanket the landscape in summer, adding a pop of color to your photos. The peaceful, untouched feel of Governor Basin makes it perfect for couples looking to escape into nature and create a truly personal elopement experience.
Governor Basin is a great spot for adventurous couples who want to hike and explore. Bring a cozy blanket and some champagne for a post-ceremony picnic overlooking the mountains!
For couples seeking an adventurous elopement, combining off-road exploration with breathtaking mountain views, the San Juans offer the perfect setting. You’ll enjoy the thrill of rugged terrain while still experiencing an intimate wedding, surrounded by the raw beauty of the mountains and plenty of secluded spots for photos and quiet, meaningful moments together.
For couples craving a dramatic, high-adventure elopement, Black Bear Pass is the perfect choice. Starting off Highway 550, this trail takes you through some of the most scenic and rugged terrain in the San Juans. With smaller offshoot trails offering views of Red Mountain’s striking red rock formations and sweeping mountain vistas at the summit, Black Bear Pass is ideal for adventurous couples who want to immerse themselves in the wild beauty of Colorado.
While Black Bear Pass is one of the most thrilling trails in the San Juans, it’s also one of the most challenging. If you’re not comfortable with off-roading, consider hiring a guide to ensure a safe and enjoyable journey to this epic location.
Book a Professional Photographer:
Capturing your elopement in the San Juans requires someone who knows the area and understands how to photograph the dramatic, natural landscapes. I’ve spent over 15 years exploring these mountains and would love to help you capture every beautiful moment of your adventure elopement. Come see more of my portfolio, here!
Hire a Guide or Off-Road Driver:
If you’re not experienced with 4X4 driving, it’s best to hire a guide who knows the area and can get you to your elopement destination safely. Check out my recs below!
Plan for the Weather:
Mountain weather can be unpredictable, so come prepared. Even in the summer, temperatures can drop at high elevations, and sudden rain showers are always a possibility. Pack layers, bring a warm jacket, and don’t forget to check the forecast before heading out!
