I’m Sasha, a self-taught, elopement and wedding photographer in Texas with a love for dirt roads and mountain air and a flair for style. With my specialties lying in weddings and elopements, I work with my clients to adapt my aesthetic to their unique personalities and situations and capture moments that they feel seen in.
The San Juan Mountains are a photographer’s dream—filled with dramatic landscapes, towering peaks, and quiet corners that often go unnoticed by the crowds. Over the past 15 years, I’ve had the privilege of exploring some of the most beautiful, lesser-known locations in this incredible region! Whether you’re looking for the perfect backdrop for your Colorado engagement photos or simply want to discover some of the best San Juan Mountain photo locations for yourself, these hidden gems offer breathtaking views and unforgettable moments. Here are my go-to spots for capturing the magic of the San Juans, from peaceful roads to high-altitude passes.

Piedra Road is effortlessly beautiful. It’s known for the peaceful escape that winds through the vast meadows with the San Juan Mountains peeking in the distance. It’s accessible without a 4X4, making it a perfect choice for couples looking for a quiet setting without the need for off-road vehicles. In the summer, the greenery is lush and vibrant, with light clouds adding a soft, dreamy touch to your Colorado engagement photos.
Visit during golden hour when the sun is setting as it casts a warm glow over the landscape. This creates a natural, cinematic light perfect for capturing those intimate moments for that film-inspired look.
Highway 550, also known as the Million Dollar Highway, is a more well-known route through the San Juans, but it still holds plenty of hidden gems making it perfect for unforgettable Colorado engagement photo locations. The dramatic cliffs and valleys make for incredible views, and early mornings here are pure magic with mist rising from the mountains and soft sunlight glowing off of the peaks.
Stop at the lesser-known pull-offs along the highway for more private, secluded photo opportunities.
For those with a sense of adventure and wild at heart, Black Bear Pass is one of the most exciting and rugged San Juan Mountain photo locations. This off-road route requires a 4X4, but the effort is worth it. You’ll be rewarded with sweeping mountain views that quite literally take your breath away, cascading waterfalls, and dramatic cliffs that feel untouched by time.
Due to the difficulty of the pass, it’s best to go with someone experienced in off-roading. The scenery is dramatic, so bring outfits that contrast with the natural colors for a stunning effect.
At over 13,000 feet, Imogene Pass offers views that feel like standing on the edge of the world. This high-altitude haven is one of my favorite Colorado photoshoot locations for its quiet, less-traveled paths and breathtaking panoramas of the San Juan Mountains. The journey requires a 4X4, but the view from the top is unparalleled—perfect for couples seeking a truly epic backdrop.
Plan your visit for a clear day when you can see the full expanse of the San Juans. The best time for photos is just after sunrise, when the light is soft and the peaks are bathed in a gentle glow.
